Bakun AC employs local residents

THE Bakun AC Hydroelectric Power Plant in Amilongan in the town of Alilem, Ilocos Sur has been operating since 2000. The plant has a total of 37 employees — 29 of whom are residents of the surrounding local communities.

Plant operations bring employment opportunities for engineers and non-engineering positions as well. Residents with technical skills have also found employment in the plant.

Nine employees come from Alilem, Ilocos Sur. Another Eight employees are residents of Bakun, Benguet. The others come from municipalities like Vigan and Tagudin in Ilocos Sur, and Sudipen and San Fernando in La Union.

Of those from Alilem and Bakun, some have been employed for half the time the plant has been operating.

Today, the Bakun AC Hydroelectric Power Plant is operated by the Luzon Hydro Corporation and managed by Hedcor.

Hedcor is fast expanding by building new plants in the Mountain Province and Davao del Sur. The workforce for the new plants will be sourced directly from local communities as well.

To date, Hedcor has 459 regular employees across the country. The company is ISO-certified for Occupational Health and Safety and a recipient of the Safety Milestone Award of the DOLE.

Hedcor is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the AboitizPower Corporation. Including Bakun AC, Hedcor manages 19 run-of-river hydropower plants in Ilocos Sur, Benguet and Davao and has a total generating capacity of 155MW.
