Hedcor to mark 35 years in the hydro power industry

This May, renewable energy company Hedcor will mark 35 years in the hydropower industry.

The company was formed in 1978 under the name Hydro Electric Development Corporation or HEDCOR. The company was originally formed to operate and maintain four National Power Corporation (NPC)-owned power plants in Talomo, Davao City.

HEDCOR started operating in Benguet in 1986, when it took on the rehabilitation and operation of the Baguio-owned Asin mini-hydro plants through a sharing agreement with the City of Baguio and the Baguio Water District. These plants were eventually turned-over to the City of Baguio in 2006 after the contract expired.

In 1987, Executive Order 215 opened opportunities in the power generation industry by allowing the private sector to generate energy. This began a string of events that saw HEDCOR rise to becoming the country’s leading developer of run-of-river hydropower plants.

In 2005, HEDCOR and sister company, Northern Mini Hydro Corporation, were merged into the Benguet Hydro Corporation (BHC). Because of HEDCOR’s strong reputation with its host communities and recognition in the industry, BHC adopted the name Hedcor, Inc.

Today Hedcor has a renewed vision of generating 2 Billion kWhs of Cleanergy by 2020. This means the company is steadily increasing its work force to support its plans of expansion to meet its vision. The company has been recognized as among the top employers in the country today, winning accolades such as the Department of Labor’s Gawad Kaligtasan and Kalusugan Award for Occupational Safety and the Health and Safety Milestone Award given out by the Bureau of Working Conditions. Recently, the company was recognized by the DOLE with the Tripartite Certificate of Compliance with Labor Standards.
Hedcor is OHSAS 18001:2007 certified – the international standard for Occupational Health and Safety Systems.

Ongoing expansion projects include the Tudaya Hydroelectric Project in Davao del Sur and the soon to be built Sabangan Hydroelectric Power Project — Hedcor’s first in the Mountain Province.

Hedcor, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AboitizPower owning and operating 19 run-of-river hydropower plants in Benguet, Davao, Davao del Sur and Ilocos Sur with a total capacity of 155 MWs.
