PICE Sponsors seminar on Civil Engineers

167 Baguio-based civil engineering students attended a seminar called “Advanced Knowledge For Future Filipino Civil Engineers” at the BCF Theater in Baguio City last March 7, 2002. The seminar was organized by the Baguio Colleges Foundation Chapter of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE-BCF). Its objective was to give students a background on the possible fields of specialization in civil engineering.
The first speaker was Engineer Rafael Macabiog, water engineer and technical services supervisor of
Hydro Electric Development Corporation, which belongs to the largest mini-hydro group in the
country. Macabiog lectured on recent developments on water engineering.
Macabiog compared clean and renewable energy sources to conventional energy sources, which emit
large amounts of carbon dioxide and produces a phenomenon called global warming. “Clean energy
sources like hydro, wind, solar and geothermal have little or no adverse impact on the environment,”
he said.
The second speaker was Engineer Emmanuel Alban, a former BCF engineering professor who is now
an independent contractor . He lectured on bridge engineering.
The PICE-Baguio Chapter, of which the BCF Chapter is a member, is organizing another seminar on
Water Engineering Specialty Division this coming April. They also sponsor a Builder’s Forum at
Viacomm in Baguio City every Saturday evening at 8PM. The 1-hour discussion focuses on topics of
concern to the civil engineering profession. For more information, please contact: Engineer Antonio
Caluza, PICE – Baguio Chapter president at (074) 443-3123.
