Dalawa Elementary School in Alilem, Ilocos Sur and Mating Mangosan Elementary School in Sablan, Benguet receive “Silid Pangarap” from hydropower partner, Luzon Hydro Corporation and Hedcor, Inc.
Through the thrust between Aklat, Gabay, Aruga tungo sa Pag-angat at Pag-asa (AGAPP) Foundation, Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (AFI) and the run-of-river hydropower companies, the two-classroom kindergarten school buildings are entrusted on September 4 and 5 respectively.
“We are here to help provide the needs of our host community in as much as we can. And one of our focus is making education available to all,” laments AFI Executive Vice President Augusto Carpio III.
The P1.2 million school building dubbed as “Silid Pangarap” are equipped with age appropriate learning materials that will prepare Grade 1 entrants. Tables, chairs, cabinets, library, educational toys and a toilet makes the conducive learning environment. Painted with vibrant colors of red, green and yellow, the classroom will be the second home of the communities’ young learners.
Both mayors of host towns, Mar Ruel Sumabat of Alilem and Arthur Baldo of Sablan expressed appreciation of the companies’ presence in their locality.
Sablan hosts one of Hedcor’s 11 run-of-river plants in Benguet, the 8MW Ampohaw hydro plant. Alilem is host to the 70MW Bakun AC hydro.
Sharing AFI’s mission of ‘helping people help themselves’ and AGAPP Foundation’s effort in supporting the education system, Luzon Hydro and Hedcor affirm to bring educational facilities closer to its host.
AFI is the corporate social responsibility arm of all Aboitiz companies. Meanwhile, AGAPP Foundation is a non-government organization formed to support the primary education program in the country.
Other projects centered on education includes infrastructure building, college scholarship and high school financial assistance, integrated computerization, book donation, and out-of-school youth (OSY) training.
At present, Luzon Hydro and Hedcor built seven ‘Silid Pangarap’ in Luzon. Four are in Benguet located in the municipalities of Itogon, La Trinidad, Bakun and Sablan. Three are in Alilem, Ilocos Sur.
Reading Time. Children who will be occupying the newly built school building flocked around Chris Faelnar, senior vice president of Hedcor and Luzon Hydro for a reading session. The classrooms are equip with books and educational toys for the children.
