Baguio Colleges Foundation Civil Engineering faculty, Wilfranor delos Reyes, recently completed her graduate thesis entitled “Characterization of Suspended Sediments Along the Bakun River Networks Flowing into Mini-Hydroelectric Power Plants of Hedcor in Benguet, Philippines,” in partial fulfillment of her Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree. Hedcor and Northern Mini Hydro Corporation (NMHC) assisted Reyes’ research through the companies’ Hydro University Research Program.
Reyes’ study focused on the sediment properties and characteristics of the Bakun River that would be
applied to sediment discharge equations. The challenge of her study was to gather empirical data
and transform them into measurable mathematical equations that would help Hedcor and NMHC
control some of its sedimentation problems.
NMHC, Hedcor’s sister company, owns and operates three run-of-river mini hydro power plants that
tap into the Bakun River system. Sediments from the Bakun River flow into NMHC’s system and
affect the intake structures, conveyance lines, turbines, and the overall power generating capability of
“We are currently experiencing siltation problems at our intake dams because recent typhoons have
damaged the watershed. Because of this, engineer Reyes’ study comes at an opportune moment.
Her thesis can help us improve our desanders in order to increase our electricity generation. ,” said
Hedcor chief operating officer, Rene Ronquillo. Reyes said, “I would like to thank Hedcor and my
thesis adviser, engineer Rafael Macabiog, for their patience and support. I hope Hedcor continues to
sponsor more student research such as this and give students a chance to explore their potentials.”
Engr. Reyes, 42, is an associate professor at BCF and teaches Math and Physics subjects. A BS
Civil Engineering product of Saint Louis University in 1983, she first worked as an engineering aide at
Ei-Suke Industries Corporation before starting her career in the academe in 1985. She is married to
Jesus delos Reyes and a mother of a 16-month old boy named, Jude Angelo. She is a member of
the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE)
Hedcor’s Hydro University is a synergistic partnership between the academe and the power industry.
It is subdivided into three programs (On-the-Job Training Program, Project Study Program, and
Research Program), which give engineering students the opportunity to develop needed skills and
knowledge that will benefit their future professional careers. For more details on how to qualify for the
Hydro University Programs, please the Opportunities section of www.hedcor.com.
